Quick answer: High-volume traders cut costs by measuring their real cost per lot, picking the account type that fits their style, trading when spreads are tight, controlling swaps, and adding a rebate on every lot. At 200 lots a month, even $2.50 per lot back is $500 a month, or $6,000 a year.
If you trade 100 or 200 lots a month, you already know the uncomfortable truth. Your broker gets paid on every single trade. Win, lose or break even, the spread and commission come out first.
We talk to scalpers in Kuala Lumpur and gold traders in Karachi who make good calls and still end the month flat. Why? Because costs ate the edge. So let’s fix the part you actually control.
How much do trading costs really add up to?
More than most traders think. Take a common setup. On IC Markets’ Raw Spread MetaTrader account, commission is $3.50 per lot per side, or $7 per round turn, according to IC Markets’ account overview. Add a 0.1-pip spread on EUR/USD, worth $1 per standard lot.
| Monthly volume | Commission at $7/lot | Spread at 0.1 pip ($1/lot) | Total monthly cost | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 lots | $350 | $50 | $400 | $4,800 |
| 100 lots | $700 | $100 | $800 | $9,600 |
| 200 lots | $1,400 | $200 | $1,600 | $19,200 |
That’s before swaps, slippage and wider spreads during news. The forex market is huge, averaging $9.6 trillion a day in April 2025 according to the BIS. Brokers don’t need you to win. They need you to trade.
Why do costs matter more when you trade a lot?
Because most traders don’t have much edge to spare. A Babypips review of 28 CFD providers’ mandatory risk warnings found an average of 76% of retail CFD accounts lose money. That data is from 2019, but the pattern hasn’t changed much.
If your strategy makes 5 pips gross per trade and you pay 1.5 pips in all-in costs, you’re giving away 30% of your gross profit. Cut costs by even half a pip and your results change visibly. For a scalper, cost is the strategy.
How do you cut trading costs step by step?
Step 1: Work out your real cost per lot
Open last month’s statement. Add commission, the average spread you paid and net swaps, then divide by lots traded. Most traders who do this are surprised. The trading profit calculator helps you see it per trade.
Step 2: Match the account type to your style
Scalpers and EAs usually do better on raw-spread accounts with a fixed commission. Swing traders who hold for days often prefer standard accounts with no commission. Run both through your real volume before you switch.
Step 3: Trade when spreads are tight
Spreads widen at the daily rollover and in the first minutes after big data like NFP or CPI. For traders in Jakarta or Karachi, rollover lands in the early morning hours. Avoid opening new positions then.
Step 4: Control swap costs
Holding positions overnight costs swap, which can add up fast on gold. If you hold for days, check your broker’s swap table or ask about a swap-free (Islamic) account.
Step 5: Get a rebate on every lot
This is the step most traders skip, and it’s the easiest. A rebate service returns part of the broker’s commission to you on every lot, whether the trade won or lost. It doesn’t change your spread or execution.
How much can a rebate save a high-volume trader?
Here’s where the numbers get interesting. When you open your broker account through FXPayback, we return up to 90% of the IB commission to you as cashback.
At the time of writing, Exness cashback on a Standard account is $2–3 per lot on forex and up to $5–7 per lot on gold. On IC Markets, our page lists up to $3.60 per lot on gold for Standard accounts and up to $1.80 on Raw Spread.
A worked example for an active Exness trader:
- 150 lots of forex × $2.50 = $375
- 50 lots of gold × $5 = $250
- Total: $625 a month, or $7,500 a year
That’s money you get back for trades you were placing anyway. Plug in your own volume with the rebate calculator, and read our full guide on how to reduce trading costs.

One caution. A rebate lowers your costs, but it can’t turn a losing strategy into a winning one. Never trade more just to earn more cashback. Overtrading costs far more than any rebate pays back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest trading cost for high-volume traders?
For most active traders it’s the combined spread and commission paid on every trade. On a raw account with $7 round-turn commission, 200 lots a month costs $1,400 in commission alone.
Is a raw spread account cheaper than a standard account?
Often yes for scalpers and EAs who trade many lots, because raw spreads are tighter. Swing traders who trade less may find a standard account simpler. Compare both using your real monthly volume.
How much cashback can I earn on 200 lots a month?
It depends on your broker and instrument. At $2.50 per lot, 200 lots of forex returns $500 a month. Gold often pays more per lot on Exness Standard accounts.
Does a forex rebate change my spreads or execution?
No. With FXPayback, you trade with the broker as normal and receive cashback on every lot, win or lose, from part of the commission the broker already pays. Withdrawals start at $1.
