What Is a Pip Worth on Gold? XAU/USD Lot Size Explained Simply

Last updated: October 14, 2026 · By the FXPayback Research Desk

On most brokers, one standard lot of gold (XAU/USD) is 100 ounces, so every $1 move in the gold price equals $100 profit or loss per lot. A 0.10 lot makes $10 per $1 move, and a 0.01 micro lot makes $1. Always check your broker’s contract size first, because a few brokers define it differently.

Whether you trade gold from Asia, the Gulf or Europe, it’s probably your favourite market, and it’s also the one that blows up the most accounts. Why? Usually not because the analysis was wrong. It’s because the trader didn’t know how much a move was worth before they clicked buy.

Let’s fix that in five minutes.

What is one lot of gold?

On most MT4 and MT5 brokers, 1.00 lot of XAU/USD = 100 troy ounces. For example, RoboMarkets lists its XAU/USD contract size as 100 oz per lot, with a minimum trade of 0.01 lot and a minimum price step of $0.01.

With gold near $4,184 an ounce on October 13, one full lot controls about $418,400 worth of gold. That’s why small price moves feel so big.

How much is a pip worth on gold?

Here’s where traders get confused. Some people call $0.01 a “point”, some call $0.10 a “pip”, and some just talk in dollars. Forget the labels and think in dollars per $1 move:

Lot sizeOuncesValue of a $0.10 moveValue of a $1 moveValue of a $10 move
1.00 (standard)100$10$100$1,000
0.10 (mini)10$1$10$100
0.01 (micro)1$0.10$1$10

Now think about a normal gold day. A $30 swing isn’t rare at these prices. On 1 lot, that’s $3,000. On 0.10 lot, it’s $300. Same chart, very different outcome for your account.

How do you calculate the right gold lot size, step by step?

  1. Decide your risk per trade. Most experienced traders keep it at 0.5–2% of the account. Our guide on how much to risk per trade explains why.
  2. Turn it into dollars. On a $2,000 account, 1% is $20.
  3. Measure your stop in dollars of price. Say your stop is $8 away from entry.
  4. Divide. A 0.01 lot loses $8 if the stop is hit. $20 ÷ $8 = 2.5, so the most you can trade is 0.025 lot.
  5. Round down. Trade 0.02 lot. Never round up.

How much margin do you need to trade gold?

Margin depends on leverage, and leverage on gold is often lower than on currencies. In the EU, regulators cap retail leverage on gold at 20:1, versus 30:1 on major pairs. Offshore brokers often allow much more.

  • 1 lot at 1:20: about $418,400 ÷ 20 = $20,920 margin.
  • 1 lot at 1:100: about $4,184 margin.
  • 0.10 lot at 1:100: about $418 margin.

Low margin doesn’t mean low risk. Your loss is set by lot size and stop distance, not by leverage. Run your own figures in the margin calculator before you size up.

A candid point: ESMA’s own research found 74–89% of retail CFD accounts lose money. Getting lot size right won’t make you profitable on its own, but getting it wrong is the fastest way to join that group.

How can gold traders cut their trading costs?

Gold spreads are wider than EUR/USD in dollar terms, and active gold traders take a lot of trades. Those costs pile up quietly.

This is exactly why we built FXPayback. Trade through a partner broker via FXPayback and we return up to 90% of the IB commission to you as cashback on every lot, win or lose. Withdrawals start at $1.

A worked example: on an Exness Standard account through FXPayback, the gold rebate is up to $5–7 per lot at the time of writing. If you trade 20 lots of gold a month and earn $5 per lot, that’s $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, back in your account. Trading on another broker? Estimate your own number with the rebate calculator.

FXPayback has been paying traders since 2020, and you can see our payout proofs anytime.
