Quick answer: A gold scalping strategy means taking many small, quick trades on XAU/USD, usually on 1- to 5-minute charts, aiming for a few dollars of price movement each time. It works best during the London and New York sessions, with fixed risk, hard stops and very low trading costs, because spread and commission eat a big share of small targets.
Gold is the favourite market for scalpers from Karachi to Kuala Lumpur, and it’s easy to see why. It moves fast, it trends hard during the London and New York sessions, and one good move can pay for the whole day.
It also punishes sloppy traders faster than almost anything else. So let’s keep this practical: what gold scalping is, how to do it step by step, and where the money quietly leaks out.
What is gold scalping, and who is it for?
Scalping is short-term trading where you hold positions for seconds to a few minutes. Instead of catching a $50 swing, you try to grab $2 to $5 moves, many times a day.
It suits you if you can sit in front of the screen during active hours, follow rules without arguing with them, and handle a string of small losses without revenge trading. If you trade part-time after office hours in Jakarta, a slower swing approach may fit your life better. No shame in that.
Why do costs matter so much more for gold scalpers?
Start with the maths of the contract. On most MetaTrader platforms, one standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 troy ounces, so a $1 move in gold equals $100 per lot, according to VT Markets’ gold contract guide.
| Lot size | Value of a $1 gold move | Example cost if round-trip spread is 25 cents |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 (standard) | $100 | $25 |
| 0.10 (mini) | $10 | $2.50 |
| 0.01 (micro) | $1 | $0.25 |
The 25-cent spread is just an illustration. Your broker’s figure will differ. But look at what it means: if your target is a $2 move, a 25-cent spread swallows 12.5% of your win before you start. A swing trader aiming for $30 barely notices that. A scalper doing 10 trades a day feels it every single time.
How do you scalp gold, step by step?
- Pick your hours. Gold is most liquid during the London and New York overlap, roughly 12:00–16:00 UTC. That’s 5–9 p.m. in Karachi, 7–11 p.m. in Jakarta and 8 p.m.–midnight in Kuala Lumpur. Outside that window, moves get choppy and spreads can widen.
- Mark your levels on a 15-minute chart. Yesterday’s high and low, the Asian session range and any round numbers like $4,100 or $4,200. These are where scalps happen.
- Enter on the 1- or 5-minute chart. Keep it simple: a pullback to the 20-period EMA in a clear trend, or a break and retest of a marked level. One setup, practised well, beats five half-learned ones.
- Set a hard stop before you enter. Decide the dollar distance first. In quiet conditions that might be $3–5. In weeks like this one, when gold fell about 4% in a single session on September 28 per Saxo, you need wider stops and smaller size.
- Size the trade from your risk, not your hope. Lots = (account × risk %) ÷ (stop in dollars × 100). On a $1,000 account risking 1% with a $4 stop, that’s $10 ÷ $400 = 0.025, so round down to 0.02 lots. Our position size calculator does this in seconds, and the margin calculator shows how much margin each trade ties up.
- Take profit fast. Aim for at least 1:1 reward to risk. Many scalpers close half at 1R and trail the rest.
- Stay out of the news spike. US inflation and jobs data can move gold several dollars in seconds, with slippage and widened spreads. Wait a few minutes after the release, or sit it out.
- Set daily limits. A max number of trades and a max daily loss (say 3% of the account). Hit either, and you’re done for the day.
What mistakes kill gold scalpers?
Most retail traders lose money, and scalpers are not exempt. IC Markets’ regulatory disclosure shows 73.42% of retail CFD accounts lose money, per data updated on September 28, 2026 and reported by BrokerChooser. The usual culprits:
- Trading too big because the stop is “only” $3
- Moving the stop-loss when price comes close to it
- Overtrading in dead hours when there’s no real movement
- Revenge trades after two or three losses in a row
- Ignoring costs, which quietly turn a break-even strategy into a losing one
How much can a gold scalper save with cashback?
This is where scalpers have an edge they often ignore. You can’t make gold’s spread disappear, but you can get part of your trading cost back on every lot, winning trade or losing trade.
That’s what FXPayback does. Trade through your broker via FXPayback and we return up to 90% of the IB commission to you as cashback. At the time of writing, the Exness cashback on a Standard account is up to $5–7 per lot on gold and $2–3 per lot on forex.
A worked example. Say you scalp 3 lots of gold a day across all your trades, for 20 trading days:
- 3 lots × 20 days = 60 lots a month
- 60 lots × $5 per lot = $300 back per month
- That’s about $3,600 a year, on trades you were taking anyway
For a scalper, that can be the difference between a strategy that breaks even and one that pays. Trade elsewhere? Check current rates on our IC Markets cashback page or XM cashback page, and plug your own volume into the rebate calculator. FXPayback has been paying traders since 2020, you can withdraw from just $1, and our payout proofs are public.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gold scalping profitable?
It can be for disciplined traders with a tested setup, strict risk rules and low costs, but most retail traders lose money. Treat it as a skill to practise on a demo or tiny size first, not a quick way to get rich.
What is the best time to scalp gold in Pakistan, Indonesia or Malaysia?
The London–New York overlap, roughly 12:00–16:00 UTC: 5–9 p.m. in Karachi, 7–11 p.m. in Jakarta and 8 p.m. to midnight in Kuala Lumpur. Avoid the first minutes after major US data.
What lot size should I use to scalp gold on a small account?
Work backwards from your risk. With $1,000, 1% risk and a $4 stop, 0.02 lots is about right. Use a position size calculator every time rather than guessing.
Can I get cashback on gold scalping trades?
Yes. FXPayback pays a rebate on every eligible lot you trade through a partner broker, including gold, whether the trade wins or loses. Check your broker’s own rules on very short trades first.
